Book Fair

What is it?
The Book Fair is an annual event organised by school  that takes place around  November, coinciding with the Parent Council discos to allow parents to browse and make Christmas purchases while their children are attending the disco.

On the first day that the fair arrives the parents’ role is to put a sticker one of each book to indicate that it is a ‘display copy’ and therefore can’t be sold.  After that, their role is to be there for classes to visit.

The first time a class visits altogether to browse and write their individual ‘wish lists’.  For younger infant classes the helpers would write the name of any books they like down on paper for them.   After these visits they would tidy the books in their cases once again for the next class.

Each class then has a second visit for those with money to buy a book/stationery.  The parent helpers would sell books – handle money etc. – or complete order forms for the children by referring to a catalogue list provided.  Parent helpers are never expected to count or bank the money because the school arranges banking.

How often will I be involved?
Ideally parents are in teams of 2 or 3 at a time, and would do no longer than a third of a day at a time, e.g. 9.15-10.45/11.00-12.30/1.30-3.00.  The book fair tends to last five days and parent volunteers would be required to help each day.

How long does it last?
The aim is that each parent will cover at most a third of a day each day, e.g. 9.15am to 10.45am, 11.00am to 12.30pm or 1.30pm to 3.00pm and/or they may cover the time of the disco – 6pm to 8.45pm.

Is a PVG assessment required?
No
